Happy New Year

A blue moon has marked the transition from 2009 to 2010. The blue moon is the second this month - and is the first New Year's Eve blue moon since 1990. The next is likely in 2028. HAPPY NEW YEAR! This will mark the 4th year Colleges by the River has been operating. Our staff is having a break tomorrow - Friday 1st, but will be back on Saturday and Sunday - 8.30am to 4pm. The weather has been unsettled over the last few weeks - but (fingers crossed) it will be fine over the weekend. The rain has greened the Colleges Crossing Recreation Reserve and Ross (the groundsman) has trimmed much of it up for the New Year. This is officially the wettest December for 5 years. We are lucky to be still getting deliveries on the weekend to ensure that everything is fresh.

Picture Perfect

We have had plenty of feedback about the picture of the dining area on the blog. Some have asked whether it is a painting. No, its a photo - but definitely a work of art. It was shot by one of our very good friends - Warren Stone. We had some of Warren's work on display at times during the year. If you want to see just how good Warren is check out his website www.warrenstoneart.com.

A Merry Christmas

With one sleep 'til xmas, the staff at the cafe have been having a day off. Colleges by the River staff will also be spending tomorrow with their families - still probably cooking and making coffee and tea for family and guests. While we are having a break - we will be back on the job on Saturday and Sunday - as well as the public holiday on Monday.
One person who had to work today was Ross - he's the reason why Colleges Crossing get heaps of praise for the being the perfect place to visit. Ross has been hard at it mowing the lawns and trimming - not a small job - the Recreation Reserve covers nearly 25 hectares.
From all the staff - a very merry xmas - and we hope to see you on the weekend.

Feeding Birds

With the cafe located in the Colleges Crossing Recreation Area it means that we have to co-exist with 50 species of fauna. This adds to the special outdoor atmosphere of Colleges by the River. But some birds are wanting to join in the feeding fun. This can be aggravated by people feeding food morsels to birds. We are determined to discourage this practice as some birds like kookaburras are becoming adept at swooping on plates of food. Just this week, one kookaburra dive bombed a big breakfast being delivered to a customer. Some customers have had close calls with birds stealing food being lifted between plate and mouth. We have signs warning against feeding birds. Relax and enjoy your meal - but, be aware there may be a feathered thief lurking in a nearby tree.

Healthy Coffee

News today that an international study found that drinking three or four cups of coffee per day was associated with a 25 percent lower risk of diabetes than drinking two cups of or less per day. (Report from the British Medical Journal)
Colleges by the River always aims to provide an enjoyable coffee experience. Our coffee is Grinders Brazil Blend, and we have recently updated our espresso machine to maintain a quality coffee outcome. Along with our key barista - Nasanah, we have 6 trained baristas to look after all your coffee requirements - seven days a week. Don't forget our tea and Bondi Chai Lattes.

Healthy Menu Choices

Colleges by the River caters for those who are looking for vegetarian options. Fresh from our ovens is a scrumptious vegetarian lasagne. It contains layers of sweet potato, pumpkin, roasted zucchini, mushroom, spinach sauce and mozzarella cheese. Served with a garden salad.
Our cafe also has big vege burgers made from roasted sweet potato, lentils and a pinch of curry powder. The patties are coated in breadcrumbs and sesame seeds. They are served on a burger bun with lettuce, tomato and beetroot. Relax, and enjoy life under the huge shady tree on our deck.

11th December 2009

With the current summer sizzle it's no surprise that icy slushees are gaining in popularity. Colleges by the River has a new cola flavour in its line up. Today the temp is expected to reach 36 degrees - with 70-percent chance of rain and possible late thunder.

Thursday, December 10, 2009

During xmas/new year - the cafe will be closed on 24th & 25th December (christmas eve and christmas day). It will also be closed on New Year's Day 1st January 2010.

2 weeks to xmas

It's a frantic time of the year for everyone - battling traffic and shopping centre crowds. However, Colleges Crossing offers a quiet oasis where you can relax and enjoy a rejuvenating coffee under our shady tree by the river and lake. With the fierce early summer heat - 40c this week, you can also indulge yourself with a icy slushee. There's no place like it on the Brisbane River.
