The recent rain and flooding at Colleges Crossing has led me thinking about the old aussie expression - 'send it down hughie/hewie'. An expression you hear in the bush, and around surfers - if my memory serves me from those lost years of the 60's. What do they say 'if you can remember the time - you weren't there'. There's been a lot of speculation about its origins - some suggesting it even came from Billy Hughes - a former PM who was once an agricultural minister. But it may have also come from from a family in the Riverina - the Huie's. See the story by clicking the headline on this post. It is a very plausible explanation since there was a 1912 report from Narrandera that suggests that it was inspired by amateur meteorologist Mr Huie.
Whatever - I will continue to use the expression - love it.
